How Long Does the Flu Last?
When you are dreaming of a fun holiday season, getting sick with the flu is probably not on the top of your list.
But the reality is that thousands of Americans get the flu each year. That’s why our team at AFC Urgent Care Athens TN wants to share some tips on preventing the flu, along with what symptoms to watch for.
How Long Does the Flu Last For?
Typically, the flu lasts for around one to two weeks, with its most serious symptoms occurring in the first days.
But even after most of your symptoms go away, you may still find yourself feeling fatigued and with other minor symptoms. It takes a little while for your body to recover.
Symptoms of the Flu
- Sore throat
- Fever (around 100.4 F or higher)
- Nasal congestion
- Chills
- Aching muscles
- Dry cough
- Fatigue
- Sweats
- Weakness
- Headache
Can the Flu Shot Give Me the Flu?
No! The flu shot contains inactivated strains of the flu, so it cannot give you the flu. It’s your best defense against the flu.
But because it takes your body two weeks to build up antibodies after the flu shot, there is still an opportunity to get the flu during that time period. However, if you do end up with the flu after a flu shot, you can still benefit from the vaccine, as symptoms are usually not as severe and the length of the sickness is shorter.
